There are so many products on the market – some that work, some that don’t, and some that are just dangerous bodybuilding supplements in sheep’s clothing. First and foremost, if it sounds too good to be true, IT IS. There is no such thing as a “miracle” supplement, and nothing gives you the results of steroids without the side effects. A lot of times when it comes to supplement dangers the products themselves are fine, it’s user error that makes them dangerous.

Too Much Protein Supplementation

Whey protein, or protein in general, is a building block in all fitness routines as well as an essential nutrient for life. However, too much protein, like too much of anything is bad. Many bodybuilders double their recommended amount of protein right before their competitions. No person should have more than 1.7g of protein per pound of body weight each day. Counteracting a high heart rate that comes from the stimulant, with something that relaxes the muscles (including the heart) can result in heart damage or even a heart attack. If you need something to suppress the stimulation from the products you take before the workout, more than likely you should not be taking it to begin with.

Anything with Ephedra or Ephedrine

Dangerous bodybuilding products include anything with ephedrine or ephedra, even things that say ephedrine free still contain similar ingredients, with similar side effects. Ephedrine is a fat burner that gives you energy similar to caffeine, but it’s very hard on the heart. Side effects of these ephedrine and ephedrine like products are heart attack, stroke, and heart palpitations. You are better off taking caffeine or drinking caffeine before your workouts.

The FDA banned these substances for dietary supplements several years ago because of those potentially dangerous side effects. Still, there are many products still being sold illegally with those ingredients, particularly online.  It’s always best to avoid those, not only because they’re dangerous, but also because it’s breaking the law to even purchase them.

Steroids

Another body building product that is dangerous is of course steroids. That one is obvious, however, do you know exactly what the side effects are? Side effects include but are not limited to:

  • Purple/red spots on the body
  • Bad breath
  • Severe swelling
  • Yellow skin (a symptom of damaging liver)
  • Failed liver
  • Dizziness
  • Mood swings

  • Sterility

While there are many workout enhancers, watch out for the dangerous bodybuilding products. Bodybuilding can be rewarding, but the biggest reward is being healthy. Watch out for things that sound too good to be true, as more often than not that is the case. Most importantly make sure when you are taking ANYTHING to use as directed, user error is is one of the most common bodybuilding mistakes.
